Irrigation System Installation in Austin, TX: The Decisions Made Before Anyone Digs
An irrigation system installation in Austin, TX is mostly designed before a trencher arrives on the property. Zone count, what goes on each one, cycle length and pipe depth are settled on paper, and once the ground is closed those choices are expensive to revisit.
Two local conditions drive the design, and neither is about hardware: how few hours a week a household may water, and what Central Texas clay does as it wets and dries.
Southern Love Landscaping & Design runs a team of 25 that includes licensed irrigators and a dedicated Director of Operations, installing and servicing systems across the Austin area. Both of those conditions shape every plan we draw.

What Has To Be Decided Before Anyone Digs?
The zone plan, and it follows from a walk of the property rather than from a template. That walk establishes where the sun falls, which areas sit in oak shade, where the ground sheds, what is planted in each bed, and where the supply enters and at what pressure.
Available flow is the hard constraint. A zone can only run as many heads as the supply will feed at proper pressure, so the pressure reading effectively sets the zone count before anything else is decided. Our irrigation system installation work starts there rather than at the equipment list.
Turf and planting beds then go on separate zones, because they want completely different amounts of water delivered differently. Turf takes a shorter, more frequent application across the whole surface. Beds and established native planting want a longer, slower soak at the root zone and much less of it.
Put them together and the beds get whatever the turf needs, which produces beds that stay too wet, plants that rot at the crown, and water paid for and wasted.
How Do Austin Watering Days And Central Texas Clay Shape The System?
Watering days set a hard ceiling on how long the system has to work with. A household assigned a limited window has to deliver a full cycle across the entire property inside it, and a cycle is the sum of every zone's run time, because zones run one after another rather than together.
Twelve zones at fifteen minutes is three hours. Too many small zones and the cycle stops fitting the window; too few and pressure drops and coverage goes patchy. Balancing those two against the permitted hours is the part of the job that separates a designed system from an assembled one.
The clay does something different: it moves. Soil through much of this area shrinks as it dries and swells again when it rains, and that movement acts on everything buried in it. The practical consequences are specific.
Pipe is laid at a consistent depth rather than following the surface, swing joints go beneath each head so the riser can move with the soil instead of shearing at the fitting, and heads are set flush enough that seasonal heave does not leave them proud of the turf. Systems built without those details are fine for two years and then produce a broken fitting every spring.

How Does A New System Get Tuned After It Is Installed?
By running it and watching it, which is a separate visit rather than part of the install day. Every zone gets run through while someone stands in it, checking that arcs are throwing where they should, that nothing is spraying a fence or a driveway, and that head-to-head coverage is genuine rather than assumed.
Controller programming follows from that, and it changes again as the planting establishes. Our irrigation maintenance and audits service exists partly because a system set once in April is rarely still correct in September.
Design The Zones Before The Trencher Arrives
Southern Love Landscaping & Design installs and services irrigation across Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock and Georgetown.
The productive first conversation about an irrigation system is about pressure, planting and the hours you are allowed to run it, not about controllers. We will read the property, take the supply pressure, and lay out a zone plan you can look at before any ground is opened.
In Summary
Can an existing irrigation system be re-zoned rather than replaced?
Often, if the mainline and the valves are sound. Splitting an overloaded zone or moving beds onto their own valve is usually less work than a full replacement, and an audit establishes which parts are worth keeping.
Does a new landscape need irrigation before the planting goes in?
The sleeving and the mainline do. Running pipe under a walkway or terrace after it is built means cutting through finished work, so those runs belong in the ground during construction even where the heads come later.
How long does an irrigation installation take on a typical property?
The trenching and assembly on a residential lot is usually a matter of days. The scheduling variable is the water supply connection and any inspection that applies, which sits outside the installer's control.
